Optical Spectroscopic Study of Hard Ultraviolet Protection Sunglasses

Development and application of hard ultraviolet radiation protection is a very interested science and vary, during the work with ultraviolet sources with naked eyes. The eye needs to be protected of its harming action. The present study concerns a series of glasses with chemical composition (21-x)Na2O –xMgO-40P2O5-35ZnO-4CuO, x=1,2,3,4,5,and 6 mol %. The glass is fabricated by the conventional casting method, melted in a temperature up to 1000 oC and quenched at 300 oC. The density and the molar volume show opposite trends with increasing MgO content. The physical and chemical properties of the glasses were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and UV–visible optical spectrscopy. The results of XRD show no natural broadening peaks that form the material. It proofs that the systems are completely in glass state. The optical spectrodcopy data were used to determine the optical band gap Eopt, UV region cut offs. The Eopt values for different glass samples are found to decrease with increasing MgO content. The refractive index was estimated according to the Clausius–Mossotti method using the ionic refraction. The obtained values were used in estimating some characteristic features such as elasto-optic coefficient and linear susceptibility.
