An Approximate Analysis to Predict the Interface Shape for Stratified Two-Phase Systems in a Square Geometry

The present study has obtained a closed form expression to predict the stable interfacial con-figuration of a two fluid system contained in a square pipe. The principle of minimization of total system energy comprising of potential and surface energy has been employed to find out the interface. The analysis expresses interface curvature (f*) as a function of wettability angle (a), holdup ratio (A1 /A2) and Eotvos number (ev). It showed that a stable interface exists only between an upper and a lower limit of holdup and its configuration is independent of the fluids holdup.
