COBEM, International Congress of Mechanical Engineering of ABCM, is the most important event in the field of Mechanical Engineering in Latin America, occurring every two years, since 1971. Since the last decade, the congress has been counting with more than one thousand participants, many from countries other than Brazil, and has reached an international status. COBEM is organized under the auspices of ABCM – Brazilian Society of Mechanical Engineering and Sciences, a sister society of ASME – American Society of Mechanical Engineers, CSME – Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, AMCA – Associación Argentina de Mecánica Computacional, JSME – Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, IMechE – Institution of Mechanical Engineers, GAMM – Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik and of SFT – Société Française de Thermique. ABCM is a civil, non-profit organization of cultural and scientific character, founded in April 19, 1975, legally established in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In this Special Issue of High Temperatures – High Pressures you will find selected papers presented in the 19th edition of COBEM, which was held in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, during November, 5th to 9th, 2007. The central theme for COBEM 2007 was “University and enterprise: The necessary engineering”. The conference provided a forum to discuss the reality, tendencies and perspectives for cooperation between academia, governmental organizations and the productive sector seeking to promote technological and social development. From the 16 symposia organized, we have selected a number of papers directly connected to the aims and scope of High Temperatures – High Pressures, including applied and fundamental research works hopefully of interest to our readers.
The next COBEM (http://www.abcm.org.br/cobem2009/) will be held during November 15th to 20th, 2009, in the beautiful city of Gramado. Located in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul in the south of Brasil, about 120 km of the state capital (Porto Alegre), Gramado is recognized by its landscape and gastronomy.
