Surface tension of nickel based superalloy CMSX-4
M Hayashi, A Jakobsson, T Tanaka, S Seetharaman
The surface tension, γ, of CMSX-4 alloy was measured in a flow of purified argon gas by the sessile-drop technique over the temperature range 1670 – 1926 K. The surface tension at the liquidus temperature (1648 K) is 1970 mN m-1 and its temperature coefficient, dγ/dT, is 1.38 mN m-1 K-1. The surface tension was also calculated from thermodynamic data on the basis of Butler’s model. The calculated value of 1776 mN m-1 is in agreement with the measured one within the expected error limits.
