DL-methioninium maleate [DLMM] compound is one of the amino acid-based compounds exhibiting nonlinear optical behaviour. The compound DLMM was grown using a slow evaporation technique based on the knowledge of the classical nucleation theory of kinetics. The lattice parameters of the grown crystal were determined as a =11.06 Å, b = 5.67 Å, c = 19.70 Å, α = 90°, β = 102.59° and γ = 90° with the volume of the unit cell as 1229 Å3 by using single crystal X-ray diffractometer. The functional groups present in the grown material were confirmed by the FTIR study. The fluorescence spectrum of DLMM crystal was recorded and their results indicate that DLMM has blue fluorescence emission. Hirshfeld surface analysis and two-dimensional fingerprint methods were used to investigate the intermolecular interactions of the DLMM crystal. The results show that O…H interactions are the highest binding interactions (45.4%) in the packing of the molecules in the crystal. The dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and dielectric loss were analyzed with respect to frequency and temperature. The third-order nonlinear optical parameters of the material were calculated as n2 = 3.32 cm2/W, β = 3.20 cm/W, and χ(3) = 1.02 esu using the Z-scan technique. The grown DLMM compound is, therefore, a useful material for finding applications in optoelectronics due to its third-order nonlinear behaviour.
