Towards Interval Type-3 Fuzzy Fractal Decision Making: The Case of Material Quality Control

Nowadays the most utilized kind of fuzzy logic is the one named type-1, which more recently has been augmented into type-2. In recent years, we have witnessed that type-2 fuzzy has surpassed type-1 in a plethora of real-world problems under more uncertainty or dynamic situations. As a consequence, it is interesting to investigate type-3 fuzzy theory, but also dealing with the application side of this theory. We highlight the impact of interval type-3 in decision-making. The proposed method uses interval type-3 fuzzy to automate quality control in material production. Surface roughness and porosity of the materials are utilized to estimate the quality of the material with a type-3 fuzzy approach. Surface roughness is estimated with the fractal dimension as is mainly a geometrical feature of the material in a finished product. Material production demands efficient quality control and a type-3 approach is capable of surpassing type-2 and type-1 in this case.
