Effect of Phase Constituents on Tribological and Corrosion Properties of Fe-based Laser Clad Carbon Steel

Laser cladding of carbon steel with Fe-based cladding materials using a high power diode laser (HPDL) to improve the wear and corrosion resistance was conducted and investigated. Three different Fe-based laser clad layers were fabricated on the carbon steel. The morphology, phase constituent as well as microhardness, tribological and corrosion properties of the clad layers were analysed in detail. The phase constituent was found to affect greatly the properties of the Fe-based laser clad layers. The solid solution strengthening phase and dispersion strengthening phases play an important role of enhancing the microhardness, tribological and corrosion properties of three clad layers. Especially, the wear and corrosion resistances of No. 1 clad layer are better than those of the other two clad layers, and remarkably improved the service life of the steel components.
