Preface
Ninth International Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics

This special issue contains the proceedings of the Ninth International Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics held in Graz, Austria from 21 – 24 September 2010. It consists of 14 selected papers presented.

These Workshops already have a long tradition, as the first Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics was organized by Ared Cezairliyan in June 1988 at the former National Bureau of Standards (today NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA. The second Workshop was held by F. Righini September 1990 in Turin, Italy, the third Workshop by G. Pottlacher September 1992 in Graz, Austria, the fourth by I. Egry June 1995 in Köln, Germany, the fifth with chairman M. Boivenau June 1998 in Aix-en-Provence, France, the sixth by E. Kaschnitz September 2001 in Leoben, Austria, the seventh Workshop with chairman F. Millot October 2004 in Orléans, France, the eighth under the two chairmen M. Sheindlin and V. Fortov September 2007 in Moscow.

The Ninth International Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics was engaged with both, experimental and theoretical aspects of thermophysical behaviour of matter in the millisecond to picosecond time regimes. It includes rapid resistive or inductive heating (volume), laser pulse heating (surface), levitation techniques, as well as other recently developed fast investigation techniques. The emphasis is on measurements of thermophysical properties at high temperatures. In this region, pulse-heating techniques are a unique approach to study the behaviour of matter under conditions close by and far away from thermodynamic equilibrium.

This Workshop consisted of oral sessions, with three invited lectures (opening lecture, keynote lecture and ending lecture) as well as 38 presentations.

Culture and leisure was a guided city tour through the old town of Graz at the evening of 22 September and in the afternoon of 23 September the visit of the Exhibition “Radiation and Mankind“ followed by the conference dinner in Pöllauberg, both being located in Eastern Styria.

To organize such a Workshop the help of many persons is needed, therefore my special thanks to the members of the International Organizing Committee, M. Boivineau, I. Egry, E. Kaschnitz, F. Millot and M. Sheindlin, and to the members of the Local Organizing Committee, E. Kaschnitz (Vice- Chairperson), L. Windholz, T. Neger, W. Ernst, C. Cagran, H. Reschab, T. Hüpf, A. Schmon, J. Pichler, S. Brunner and B. Gsöls-Bedenik for their assistance.

The castle St. Martin hosted the Workshop. This wonderful place combined with perfect weather created a pleasant atmosphere for conversations and discussions. Thanks to M. Greiner who did everything to let us feel comfortable.

My special thanks also to our sponsors for their financial support: TU Graz, ÖGI – Leoben, Böhler Edelstahl, NETZSCH, PCO, THETA SYSTEM, AVL, nbn Electronik, Bank Austria, BM.W_f and the Land Steiermark.

Finally I would like to thank again Ivan Egry in his function as editor of the Journal “high temperatures-high pressures” for his large contribution to publish this special Workshop issue.

The Workshop hosted 66 participants including 8 accompanying persons, with 17 participants from Austria, 14 from Germany, 6 from France, 4 from USA, 4 from Russia, 2 from Italy and 1 from Japan, Netherlands, Serbia and Switzerland, each.

The Workshop-Homepage (http://www.iwsstp9th.tugraz.at/) with all its information stays functional. Many thanks to Alexander Schmon for his effort.

The Tenth International Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics will be held 2013 in Karlsruhe, Germany. It will be organized by Dr. Konstantinos Boboridis, European Commission Joint Research Centre, and Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU). I hope to meet all my colleagues of the subsecond community there again.

Chairman of the 9th International Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics
