An Improved Weight-based Coverage Enhancing Protocol (WCEP) for Application Specific Wireless Sensor Networks

The network coverage is the most significant parameter in the designing of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for surveillance applications. The conservation of energy in WSN is the prime concern for improving coverage. The energy consumption of sensor nodes is closely related to network coverage. The work is motivated by the Weight-based Coverage Enhancing Protocol (WCEP) which is used to enhance the full coverage lifetime of the WSNs. In this paper, the data transmission phase of WCEP is modified from a single hop to a multi-hop route algorithm. The objective of Improved-WCEP (WCEP-I) is to determine an optimum energy-efficient routing path that can lead to improvement in the full coverage lifetime of WSNs. The implemented results validate that the WCEP-I algorithm provides prolonged complete coverage as compared to WCEP and CPCP(Cmw) by approximately 28% and 44% respectively. Further, an evolutionary-based search algorithm is also used in the data transmission phase of WCEP to enhance its performance in terms of a longer coverage lifetime. The WCEP-GA achieves 25% approx. and 40% approx. longer full coverage of monitoring field as compared to WCEP-I and WCEP respectively.
