A theoretical framework for understanding the physics of the isosteric heat of adsorption between an adsorbent and adsorbate phase has been derived and developed using the thermodynamic requirements of chemical equilibrium, Maxwell relations and the entropy of the adsorbed phase. This thermodynamic formulation is essential for the design of adsorption heat pump and gas storage systems. The derived equation for the isosteric heat of adsorption is verified against experimentally measured data and the predictions agree within the experimental uncertainties. The purpose of this article is to fill up the information gap with respect to the state of adsorbed phase to dispel the confusion about the calculation of isosteric heat of adsorption.
