Synthesis and Characterization of Nanoscale Particle Reinforced Laser Composite Coatings

A coating was prepared on the surface of TC4 titanium alloy by the laser cladding technique. Comparison of the microstructure and microhardness of the laser clad coatings in different regions, as well as the influence of adding different elements on the coatings, was analysed in order to optimize the performance of TC4. The results showed that when the CO2 laser power was low, it was beneficial to the formation of the amorphous, refining the microstructure of the laser clad coating. In addition, small agglomerates of nanoparticles could be produced – Cu was used to produce ultrafine nanocrystals to form a large number of the nanocrystals which increased the microhardness of the coating.
