Boron Complexes as Solid-State Fluorophores

We present the recent literature on solid-state emission properties of new dyes based on boron complexes of monoanionic bidentate ligands containing two coordinating heteroatoms. For the different classes of complexes, we report the strategies, such as the limitation of π-π stacking by introducing bulky groups or the increase of the Stoke shift, that were used to overcome the aggregation-caused quenching. Using X-ray crystal data, this survey emphasizes the crucial role played by π-π interactions within this family of dyes in the crystal state, which determines to a large extent their photoluminescence emission behavior in the condensed phase. This review is intended to enlighten the potential of this recent yet old class of dyes for advanced applications in display and imaging technologies.
