On the Simplest Chemical Signal Diodes Constructed with an Excitable Medium
Joanna N. Gorecka, Jerzy Gorecki, and Yasuhiro Igarashi
We consider an excitable chemical medium as an information processing system with information coded in excitation pulses. A diode that transmits signals in one direction only is one of very basic signal processing devices and an important component of more complex information processing systems. We demonstrate that in the medium with controlled excitability the diode can be constructed using one or two non-excitable barriers only. The results of numerical simulations based on the Oregonator model are confirmed in experiments with Ru-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction.
